SUMMARY:Night Magic Treks at Railroad Bridge Park
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a one-mile trek to discover the benefits of natural night skies for our well-being and the animals that need darkness to thrive. Each trek is co-led by a team of three: an astronomer\, a storyteller\, and a naturalist. Together\, they will showcase the beauty of the night and address the fear of darkness. How can we challenge the notion that we cannot “see” in the dark? What organisms need darkness to thrive? How can we preserve natural dark in our homes and communities? \nMeet in the plaza by the large mural around 8:30pm. We will start just after sunset to allow our eyes to adjust to the coming dark naturally. Binoculars are useful if skies are clear; red-light headlamps or flashlights are preferred. \nLocation: Meet outside DRNC in the plaza by the large mural\nCost: $10 DRNC and DarkSky members | $15 non-members | $5 children 12 and under

SUMMARY:Globe at Night and DarkSky Presentation
DESCRIPTION:Join the Kitsap Environmental Coalition plus DSOP members John Goar & Linda Kahananui for a presentation on Globe at Night\, an international citizen-science campaign to raise public awareness of the impact of light pollution by inviting citizen-scientists to measure & submit their night sky brightness observations. They’ll demonstrate how to use a Sky Quality Meter\, the main tool for measuring how dark your local night skies are. \nFor more information go to: https://www.kitsapenvironmentalcoalition.org/4-15-26-kecp-dark-skies-why-it-matters \n

SUMMARY:Program: Dark Skies are for the Birds
DESCRIPTION:Do the effects of light pollution really affect the migration patterns of our avian friends? What are the bird constellations in the celestial night sky and how can I locate and see them?  What can I do to help make it less hazardous for birds during their migratory journeys and throughout the year? \nThree DarkSky Olympic Peninsula members and advocates will address and answer these and other questions as they explore the many ways our dark night sky is so very important to the survival of all birds and at the same time tell us centuries old avian heritage tales. They’ll continue with demonstrating the various ways anyone can make a difference in the protection and preservation of the darkness of the night sky not only for the sake of birds but also for the sake of humanity. \nThe program will include hands-on interactive displays\, a raffle prize or two for joining in on the activities\, and easy to apply takeaways to use anytime\, anywhere. \nLearn more and purchase tickets at https://olympicbirdfest.org

SUMMARY:Talk: For the Love of Darkness\, and the Birds
DESCRIPTION:For the Love of Darkness & Birds explores how artificial light at night endangers migratory birds and provides steps for communities to prevent these needless deaths. Since most North American birds migrate after dark\, bright building lights can disorient them\, often resulting in fatal collisions. \nHighlighting how targeted actions—specifically turning off unnecessary lights during peak spring and fall migration—can dramatically reduce bird mortality. We will look at the relationship humans have with darkness as we go a bit beyond birds and explore how the widespread use of artificial light at night also affects the nocturnal environment\, increases energy use and carbon emissions\, compromises safety\, disrupts ecosystems\, harms human health\, and diminishes our view of the universe. \nDr. Patty Giffin worked in private practice in Utah and Oregon as a psychologist specializing in post-traumatic stress\, particularly among war veterans and other trauma survivors. She earned a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from Georgetown University\, a master’s degree in human development from University of Chicago\, and a PhD in psychology from University of Utah. She currently is involved with the statewide campaign for Lights Out\, Washington!\, advocating for reduced artificial light at night to protect birds during migration and safeguard the nocturnal environment for both human health and wildlife. \nStudium Generale takes place each Thursday\, from 12:35–1:25 pm\, in the Little Theater of Peninsula College’s Port Angeles Campus (J-16)\, or livestream on Zoom: Meeting ID: 824 2331 6508 \nFor more information about Studium Generale\, please contact Kate Reavey at kreavey@pencol.edu.

SUMMARY:Lights Out: Discover the Hidden Impacts of Light Pollution
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an eye-opening presentation\, “Lights Out\,” exploring how the glow of artificial light at night affects everything from migrating birds to our view of the Milky Way. \nLight pollution—sometimes called “ALAN\,” or artificial light at night—disrupts the natural rhythms of wildlife\, adds unnecessary CO₂ to our atmosphere\, and dims the stars that once guided travelers and songbirds alike. But the good news is that it’s a problem we can all help solve. In this one-hour program\, DarkSky Board Member and OPAS Member Patty Griffin looks at how light pollution interferes with the delicate balance of ecosystems\, especially for birds navigating by starlight during migration. You’ll also learn simple\, practical steps you can take at home and in your community to help bring back the night. The evening will close with a friendly Q&A session. \nCome curious\, leave inspired—and see how protecting the night sky protects life on Earth.

SUMMARY:International Observe the Moon Night
DESCRIPTION:Join us for International Observe the Moon Night Saturday\, October 4 from 6pm-9m at the Dungeness River Nature Center! This is a worldwide celebration of lunar science and the Moon in arts and culture started by NASA. On October 4th\, 2025 everyone on Earth is invited to observe and learn about the Moon together\, and to honor cultural and personal connections with our nearest celestial neighbor.\n\nWe will be setting up Nature Center’s parking area\, weather permitting. Heavy clouds\, rain\, or very windy conditions will cause us to cancel\, so please check this space before joining us. In the event of a cancellation\, we will post links here to NASA’s and other live streaming events.

SUMMARY:For the Love of the Night Sky
DESCRIPTION:Is it too late to save the stars? Every year\, our skies grow dimmer—washed out by artificial light. Will we be the generation that lets the night sky disappear… or the one that saves it? \nDarkSky International Olympic Peninsula\, in cooperation with the Dungeness River Nature Center\, is pleased to bring a special program featuring a team of dedicated night sky rangers. It will be a two-hour journey into one of the most urgent yet overlooked environmental issues of our time: light pollution. We’ll spotlight four local groups working to protect and preserve the night sky. Learn why their efforts matter and how each of us can play a role in reducing light pollution. Discover their challenges\, triumphs\, and the innovative ways they’re reconnecting communities with the stars above. \nSpecial guest speaker Wayne Gosnell\, co-founder of Blanco County Friends of the Night Sky\, will share how one Texas community sparked a movement and how we can do the same. \nRSVP is required to attend. You can do that on DRNC’s website.
