A forest’s natural beauty doesn’t disappear when the sun goes down. Darkness is part of what makes it wild, supporting wildlife and giving us a place to experience a sky full of stars.
Now, some of that darkness is at risk. The U.S. Forest Service is proposing to rescind the Roadless Rule, which limits road construction and helps protect millions of acres of national forest land. New roads and associated development could bring artificial light into places that remain naturally dark. DarkSky International’s analysis found that 45% of lands protected by the rule retain pristine natural darkness, compared with 24% nationwide.
Here on the Olympic Peninsula, we know how much wild places mean to our communities. Let’s help protect the night within them.
