Getting involved is easy! Start right where you are.
The night sky belongs to all of us. Yet across the Olympic Peninsula, stars are fading behind a haze of wasted light – light that spills upward instead of downward, blinding instead of guiding, and glowing all night long even when no one is there to see it. The good news? Light pollution is completely reversible. Every small action adds up to a darker, healthier, and more beautiful night for people and wildlife alike.
You don’t need to be an expert or own special equipment to make a difference. You can start tonight:
- Follow the 5 Principles for Responsible Outdoor Lighting
- Turn off unnecessary outdoor lights and indoor lights that leak outdoors.
- Use warm-colored, fully shielded fixtures that aim light down where it’s needed — never up into the sky.
- Add timers, dimmers, or motion sensors so lights are only on when truly needed.
- Talk with your community leaders, local businesses, and neighbors about better lighting choices that improve safety, save money, and protect the environment.
Protecting the night is an act of care – for wildlife that depend on natural darkness, for people who need restorative sleep, and for future generations who deserve to see the Milky Way. Together, we can bring back the stars, one light at a time.
